Swim Test
*Returning Junior life guards DO NOT have to take the swim test. We will make accomodations if you cannot make the time for your child's age group or if you have multiple children from a different age group trying out.
The Junior Lifeguard Program is not a “learn to swim” program. Therefore, participants are given a tryout test to determine if they have the minimum skills needed to benefit from the program. We encourage parents to work with their child(s) on swimming skills before the beginning of the program to ensure that their child(s) can pass the test with confidence.
All swims will be held at the YMCA Pool located at 200 Saxony Rd (at Seacrest Way) Encinitas, CA 92024.
- Friday July, 2 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
- Sunday July 18th 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
- Sunday August 1st 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
- Sunday August 15th 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
The pool swim test will consist of:
- Hold breath for 20 seconds underwater.
- Swim 5 yards underwater.
- Tread water for 3 minutes.
- Swim a 100 yards crawl stroke in under 2 min 45 sec for ages 9-11, 2 min 35 sec for ages 12 - 13, 2 min 25 sec for ages 14 - 17
Apparel
*If your child was in Junior Lifeguard Program before there is a grace period this year for uniforms.
We require participants to wear a uniform for team camaraderie and safety. The uniform allows instructors and other lifeguards to monitor Junior Lifeguards and easily spot them on the beach and in the water. Junior Lifeguards must wear the required uniform in order to participate. This year, swim suits are a solid blue color. Last year’s black uniform color is okay for summer 2010. The 2010 requirements are as follows:
- Blue swim shorts for boys. Shorts should be “board short style.”
- Blue one-piece or two piece swimsuits for girls. Girl’s swimsuits shall be similar to competitive pool swim wear and not bikini style.
- White shirt with Junior Lifeguard Logo are included in the program registration.
This summer, the City Kids/Beach Kids store in Encinitas is the place to go for 2010 Encinitas Junior Lifeguard Gear, including specially branded rashguards, trunks, sweatshirts, hats and more!
